Composite materials were first used in the marine industry back in the 1970s, when Hexcel supplied glass reinforcements for performance boats, canoes and dinghies.
Decades earlier, Hexcel supplied honeycomb sandwich panels for the first hovercrafts. In the past 40 years, Hexcel has developed a wider range of composite materials to meet marine industry requirements, including proven America's Cup Class prepregs and honeycombs for performance boats and non-crimp fabrics for motoryachts. The success achieved by winning competition yachts built with Hexcel materials has led the introduction of unique products including HexTow® IM7, IM2 and HM63 carbon fibers; HexPly® M9.X (Industry Standard) and M79 (Low temperature and exotherm) prepreg systems; reinforced with HexForce® fabrics, UD constructions or HiMax™ non-crimp fabrics, that are up to 2.5 m wide with integrated inply symmetry.
Hexcel is a leading manufacturer of HiMax™ non-crimp fabrics for the marine industry, supplying major boat-builders in the UK and around the world. Our market-leading range of carbon fabrics has been used in America's Cup campaigns, luxury super yachts and high performance military vessels, and includes our ultra-lightweight carbon biaxials, as well as our large range of carbon unidirectional tapes and fabrics. Products include a wide range of Lloyds Register approved fabrics for boat-building.
In addition to the standard range of E-glass and carbon NCF, Hexcel works closely with customers to understand their specific requirements. This enables us to engineer and produce materials that are tailored specifically for their applications and processes – whether using wet lay-up or infusion, and with epoxy or polyester/vinyl ester resins systems. Hexcel also offers a kit-cutting service, which is increasingly popular as boat-builders look for labor savings during the build process.
